BMW Z4 M40i surrounded by the dramatic green valleys and rock walls of Klausen Pass

FIRST-HAND ALPINE DRIVING GUIDE

Klausen Pass

The road that makes you slow down.

Klausen Pass is not the place I choose for the quickest or most intense drive. It is the route I choose when green valleys, waterfalls, rock faces and memorable stops are the entire point of the journey.

A DRIVER'S PERSPECTIVE

BMW Z4 M40i · SWITZERLAND
01

From Altdorf towards Glarus Nord

I recommend starting in Altdorf UR and finishing towards Glarus Nord. The complete drive covers around 72 km and takes approximately an hour and a half without stops.

Of the three passes on RevToSummit, Klausen asks for the calmest approach. The road is narrow and winding, so even when traffic is only moderate you need to stay attentive and leave a proper margin.

02

A drive led by the landscape

There are places where the road opens up and the Z4 feels eager to stretch its legs, but that is not what makes Klausen special. The strongest memories are the deep green valleys, exposed rock, waterfalls and small villages along the way.

I would actively plan more stops here than on the other routes. Some viewpoints are better appreciated after switching off the engine and simply taking in the landscape.

03

Why the slower pace works

The BMW Z4 M40i is just as enjoyable here at a relaxed pace. With the roof down, you notice more of the valley, the changes in temperature and the sound reflected from the rock walls.

Klausen rewards drivers who arrive for the full Alpine atmosphere rather than a constant sequence of fast corners. Respect for cyclists, local traffic and changing road width is part of what makes a good day here.

04

Build in time for waterfalls

The drive itself takes roughly 1.5 hours without stops, but I would not plan it that tightly. Waterfalls, broad valleys and picturesque villages are exactly why this pass deserves a slower schedule.
